What working together actually involves.

One cycle, four stages. Take the whole thing, or the single stage where you are stuck. Either way, it starts with the same call.

Stage one

Narrative and strategy

Before a word of the personal statement gets written, we settle what the application is arguing. Not a theme and not a slogan. A specific claim about why medicine, supported by things you have actually done, that a committee can follow from the first line of the personal statement to the last answer in an interview.

Most applications fail this quietly. The parts are all there and none of them point the same direction. That is the problem this stage exists to fix, and fixing it first makes every later decision faster.

  • A working session on your record, including the parts you were going to leave out
  • A written narrative brief you can hold every essay against
  • School list criteria built from your record rather than from a ranking
  • A calendar for the cycle with the dates that actually bind

Stage two

Primary application

The personal statement and the fifteen activities, worked until they say something. You write every draft. Neil reads, asks the questions a committee would ask, marks what is vague, and sends it back. Sometimes that means a line edit. More often, early on, it means throwing out a paragraph that was doing no work.

The activities section gets real attention, not a proofread. It is where most applicants waste their best material on job descriptions, and it is the cheapest place in the application to gain ground.

Starting in the spring is what makes a calm submission possible: the primary is finished and checked, and it goes in the day the portal opens. If you are coming to this later than that, it is not a lost cycle. Neil has expedited plenty of them, and the first session is spent deciding what gets the remaining time.

  • Personal statement from outline to final, in as many rounds as the schedule allows
  • All fifteen activity entries, with the three most meaningful given the time they deserve
  • Structural editing first, line editing last
  • An honest read on what to cut

Stage three

Secondary essays

Secondaries arrive in volume, on a clock, in the weeks when applicants are least able to write well. Schools recycle prompts more than people expect, so much of this work can be done before the first one lands.

During the season the job is turnaround. Drafts come back in days, not weeks, because a strong essay submitted in September is worth less than a good one submitted in July.

  • Pre-writing against last cycle's prompts, before your first secondary arrives
  • Fast turnarounds through July and August so nothing sits
  • Why-this-school essays that show you read past the homepage
  • A tracker so no school falls out of its window

Stage four

Interview and MMI preparation

This is the deepest part of the practice, and the part clients talk about most. Mock interviews run over video in the format your invitation actually uses: traditional one on one, panel, closed file, or MMI. Written feedback follows each one, so you are working from notes rather than from a memory of how it felt.

MMI stations are run to time, including the ones with an actor, because the timing is most of the difficulty. Ethical scenarios get worked as reasoning problems rather than memorized positions. And a real part of the preparation is what to do with a question you cannot answer, which every applicant eventually gets.

  • Mock interviews over video, with written feedback after each
  • MMI stations run to time, acting stations included
  • Traditional, panel, and closed-file formats
  • Preparation for the questions your own file invites

Structure

Three ways clients work with Ashurio.

Scope is agreed in writing before anything begins, and it can be widened later if the cycle turns out to need it.

Questions

The things applicants ask first.

If your question is not here, the consultation is a good place to ask it. There is no cost and no obligation attached to asking.

Do you guarantee admission?

No. No one can, and an advisor who says otherwise is selling something other than advising. What Ashurio commits to is the work: the plan, the editing, the mock interviews, and an honest read on where an application is weak while there is still time to do something about it.

Do you write essays for clients?

No. You write every draft. Neil edits, questions, and pushes for specifics. Committees read thousands of essays a year and hear a borrowed voice quickly, and the certification you sign at the end of the application is yours, not his.

When should I start?

Early spring is the version of this that goes smoothly. The narrative gets settled, the primary is finished ahead of time, and you submit as soon as the portal opens. Later than that is not a lost cause: applicants come in mid-cycle every year, and the work becomes expediting, which is its own skill. Interview preparation is a separate case and can start the week an invitation arrives.

What does it cost?

Fees depend on how much of the cycle you want covered, so the quote comes after the consultation, in writing, before any work starts. Payment is split: part at signing, the rest at various touchpoints and milestones.

Do you work with DO applicants?

Yes, AMCAS and AACOMAS both, including applicants running the two in the same cycle. The strategy questions differ between them and the essays are not interchangeable.

I am a career changer. Is that a problem?

Neil's own path into medicine was a career change, and an application that does not run in a straight line is the kind he reads best.

How many clients do you take?

A handful each cycle, deliberately. Neil is intentional about who he works with, and about being able to commit adequate time to every client's application.

Where do sessions happen?

Over video. Ashurio is based in New York and works with applicants anywhere in the country, on a schedule that fits around classes, work, and shifts.
